About Us

The Marriage Education Programme Inc. (MEP) was founded in 1980 in Melbourne, Australia.

Since then, more than 15,000 couples have participated in courses conducted by the MEP.

The MEP has pioneered innovative approaches to marriage education in Australia.

The MEP is approved by the Australian Department of Family and Community Services to provide marriage education programs, and is a member agency of the Catholic Society for Marriage Education and Catholic Welfare Australia.

“Marriage education works with the idea that marriage is skill-based...Exciting new research finds that what is different about the marriages that make it - that go the distance and stay happy - are behaviours or skills...that any one can learn.”

- Diane Solle, Smart Marriages Conference

Our most popular courses are Growing Together in Marriage, and FOCCUS.

Mission and Values Statement

The Marriage Education Program (MEP) is a service organization committed to supporting marriage and family life. Our mission is to serve couples preparing for marriage and married couples, by providing skills and information to build passionate lifelong marriages.

The programme's objectives are:

- To raise the couple’s awareness of the role and value of marriage and relationship education and/ or counselling in supporting their relationship throughout the life cycle.

- To provide the opportunity for couples to critically reflect on their relationship and to identify the strengths and growth areas of their individual relationship.

- To provide the couple with the opportunity to realistically explore roles and expectations of marriage and to plan for future growth in the relationship.

- To provide the couples with opportunities to explore the influence of their family of origin on their attitudes; to explore and learn communication and conflict management skills; to review budgeting and home buying and to explore other areas of their relationship such as commitment, sexuality, intimacy and spirituality.

Service delivery strategies:

The programme provides marriage and relationship education in accordance with the principles of adult education and generally accepted understandings of interpersonal relationships. Educators will lead the couples to reflect on and explore their relationship through a variety of experiential processes mindful of the cultural, religious and educational needs of the couples.
